TRANSCRIPT & SHOW NOTES
Hello, everybody, I’m your host Julia Doherty and a very warm welcome to episode 7 of the Adventure Geek Walking Club Podcast.
This is a show for those who love everything to do with the outdoors, backpacking, hiking and of course walking. Hopefully, we have something for everyone in each episode. So without further ado, let me explain the contents of this week’s show.
We always start the podcast with a bit of a quiz in the form of “guess the sound”. This will be the sound of an animal, bird, or something to do with the outdoors. As always, I will give you a bit of a clue before playing the sound, and finish up with some unknown facts about the animal at the end of the show.
Segment two continues with the adventures of Derek & Doreen. The Braunston Walk.
Doreen likes the various walking stiles and a midway light breakfast makes it all worthwhile.
Segment number three is an interview with Lynne Rose. Lynne tells us all about the Great Wall of China trip that she completed in 2019.
The fourth segment is an education slot. This week I am going to talk to you about podcasts. The best podcast player for your phone, along with some other outdoor podcasts that may be of interest to you.
We then end the show with Janet & John’s latest antics. Piece Of Cake.
Janet and John meet a new dog and climb a Northampton mountain.
So, without further ado, let’s get this show on the road, and see if you can guess this week’s soundbite. I did promise a bit of a clue, so I googled “fun facts about this animal”. Google told me that these animals are often born with white spots which vanish within 12 months.
PLAY SOUND
The answer to the soundbite will be revealed at the end of the podcast. Over to Nigel for this week’s episode of Derek & Doreen.
SWOOSH
DERICK & DOREEN EPISODE – THE BRAUNSTON WALK
Thanks, Nigel. Each time you laugh, I find myself giggling along with you! I do love the Braunston walk and I once spent a night in that church in Wolfamcote, which was really spooky! I will save that story for another day!
I am now going to transition over to this week’s interview with Lynne Rose. I loved this interview as Lynne takes us on a journey along a portion of the Great Wall of China.
PLAY INTERVIEW
I am now going to transition over to this week’s interview with Lynne Rose. I loved this interview as Lynne takes us on a journey along a portion of the Great Wall of China.
Thanks for your time today Lynne, you were awesome. I know listeners could not see your face when you were telling stories about this wonderful experience, but believe me, you lit up the screen when you relived those moments such as the special stone. I didn’t know that you needed a ticket/permit to walk the wall, and I learned lots more about the terrain and the culture. Thanks again for sharing your experience with us.
Next week we have Kathryn Ozlati who is going to be talking to us about a country that many of us would not even consider as a holiday destination, but in fact, after this interview, I have now added Iran to my list of “must visit” places.
EDUCATION SLOT
Right, time for this week’s education slot. This week I wanted to share with you a few podcasts that I listen to, which you may find interesting. First of all, I use the Overcast Podcast Player App on my iPhone.Overcast is a modern, fully featured audio podcast player with many useful features in a simple, intuitive interface. You can download podcasts for playing anytime, even when offline (great for us outdoors type!), Search and browse for new podcasts, plus get personalised recommendations. I love the Custom Playlists with smart filters. I also love that you can adjust the playback speed and of course it has an Apple Watch & CarPlay support feature.
As promised, here are a few “Outdoors” type of podcasts that you may find interesting.
- Living Adventurously – with Alistair Humphreys.
- My Camino – the Podcast – Dan Mullins
- One Year No Beer – love this podcast!
- The Outdoors Station – especially if you like gear!

SOUNDBITE ANSWER
Before we go into our finale with “Janet & John go walking” I would like to reveal the soundbite answer from the beginning of the show. For those of you who guessed a Stag, you would be right! Deer are born with white spots and then they vanish within 12 months, but a few other facts include:-
- Female fawns will usually become independent from their mother after they turn two years old, but young bucks leave after a year.
- They are not picky eaters and will snack on almost any kind of plants they can find. They are even big fans of berries and flowers in your garden!
- Deer can run up to 30 miles per hour
- Deer produce scents with glands located on their head, legs and hooves. These scents provide information to other deer about their gender, social status, physical condition and whether an area is safe.
