Check out our club members trail name stories!
I’ve met a number of people on the trail who use a different name to their regular name. I remember smiling to myself when I found out that a fellow hiker called herself a new name every time she went on the Camino, it was her way of escaping the real world for a few weeks.
Naturally, our club members and people that we have met on our travels end up with nicknames (or trail names). Read the stories below and please feel free to add yourself to the register by completing this form.
Julie Swart
Julie earned her trail name during the Peak Pilgrimage in 2021. There was a photo taken outside of Hartington Train Station and she turned to a hiking buddy and said "I always look either pissed or stupid in all my photos". When we zoomed into the photo we all had hysterics as we realised that what she claimed was absolutely true! The trail name was born.
Diana Jones
Diana earned her trail name during an early morning sunrise walk in January 2022. As the regular "round-robin" commenced we all heard an "ohhhh, look at that" from Diana. We followed her pointed finger into the air as she declared "wow, look at that shooting star". Raising our torches into the air we witnessed a flock of geese flying over us with silver bellies that sparkled in the light, just like a shooting star. (Although we think Diana thought it was an actual shooting star). lol
Emma Sapsford
The trail name "Mary Poppins" was established whilst walking the Camino in 2021 with Adventure Geek. No matter what walk Emma is attending, she has an endless supply of everything in her rucksack. From spare walking poles to first aid kits and everything in between.
ANGIE GILLEY
ANGIE GILLEY AKA: GOGILLEY
No story really but meeting you Julia at the beginning of The West Highland Way May 2021 was the just the best thing that could have happened to my walking partner Louise and me…Thank you for your endless advice and good company on that journey….#forevergrateful!
Diana Smith
I have enjoyed walking and hiking all over the world for many years. When I asked my local Nordic Walking Group for trail name suggestions they thought that Digger Dog Di would be an apt name for me. Digger is the name of my beloved Jack Russell, who is a cheeky chappie!
I am walking The Cotswold Way with The Adventure Geek in March 2018
Hilly Honess
My name is Hilly and I belong to a Nordic Walking Club in Warwickshire, UK. The leader of the group gives me the nickname "Just in time Hilly" as I am never late, but I am also never early!
I love walking and this photo was taken on the coast to coast walk a few years ago. I will be section hiking some of The Cotswold Way with The Adventure Geek in March 2018
Rachel Mumford
I walked the Camino in 2016 with my mum when I was just 13 years old. On that first trip I bought a rather large jar of Nutella but had nothing to eat it with. In the shop they only sold packets of x 20 plastic spoons, so that is what I bought! On my second Camino trip I was 15 years old. I still had lots of plastic spoons in my pack and refused to take them out. My favourite number is 22, so the trail name 22 Spoons was born.
By the way, I no longer eat chocolate!
Julia Doherty
My name is Julia and I am an Adventure Geek. I was given this name from my colleagues at work during my preparation to walk the Camino is 2016. I love the outdoors and I am a total gear geek. From apps on phones, to portable kettles! See you on the trail!
