SELF GUIDED – HELLIDON PUB WALK | 4 MILES | NORTHANTS

August 21 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm BST

With so many beautiful pubs in Northamptonshire, we thought we would do our bit to help keep these places alive and kicking.  This is the first of a series of pub walks in Northants.  We hope you enjoy your walk.

THIS IS A SELF GUIDED WALK AND YOU CAN ARRIVE ANYTIME BETWEEN 6PM-7PM.

When you arrive at The Red Lion in Hellidon, seek out the table for the Adventure Geek check-in desk.  Here you will be given:-

  • A map of the walk with clear photo instructions.

  • A challenge (should you choose to accept it).

  • An envelope including contact details, emergency details and an AG postcard for stamping).

  • AG Club members will receive 2 stamps for each walk completed.

ABOUT THE WALK – grade:  Moderate Route

The first half of this walk is along a gated road from Hellidon to Upper Catesby, a narrowed tarmac lane with gates and cattle grids.  A circuit is made via clearly marked grassy bridleways over open pastureland.  There are no stiles on this route, therefore it is a dog-friendly route.

Arbury Hill at 735 ft the highest point in Northamptonshire is very close to the route.  The peaceful Upper and Lower Catesby are hamlets rather than villages.

Points of interest:-

  • A windmill with its sails long gone is now a residential dwelling.

  • The giant telecommunications tower is prominent throughout the walk.

  • Hellidon Church was silenced along with other church bells during the second world war.

The Red Lion Pub

The Red Lion is a free house serving many different real ales, including Courage Directors, Ruddles and Hook Norton.  Cider is on draught. Apart from bar snacks, such as sandwiches etc, there are numerous other meal offerings.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU

  • Good trainers or walking shoes (and other clothes of course!).

  • A drink and snacks.
