Cosgrove and Grand Union Canal – 3 mile walk

June 21, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm BST

Free of charge walk – dogs and children welcome.
We meet every Thursday evening for a 3-5 mile walk in and around the Northants, Bucks and Warks area. The walks will ideally be no further than a 30 min drive from Towcester and we try to incorporate new walks every month.

Meeting place:  The car park alongside The Barlow Mow Pub.  Postcode: MK19 7JD

The walk starts from the street called The Stocks in the centre of the village of Cosgrove.
This 3-mile circular walk from the quiet Northamptonshire village of Cosgrove will take approximately 1hr. The walk follows a bustling stretch of the Grand Union Canal including a pass over the Iron Trunk Aqueduct and also gives a flavour of times gone by. We continue under the canal via the old horse and cattle tunnels which is an experience (hopefully you are not claustrophobic).
You will have a chance to admire the many beautiful canal boats that are moored on this stretch of the canal. The walk conveniently starts and finishes alongside The Barley Mow, a popular dog-friendly and family-friendly in that make the perfect excuse to stop and enjoy a pint, or a perhaps a coke, with new friends.
This walk is almost entirely flat and follows good gravel and tarmac surfaces for the first half before returning via pastures and farmland which may well be muddy. The tunnels under the canal are narrow (you will need to crouch!), and can also be slippery. There are a few gates and two stiles, both of which have open fencing around making them easy for most dogs. Towards the end of the walk we will need to cross the canal via a narrow lock gate so take care with children and dogs here. We may be sharing the pastures with cows or sheep.
