9:45 AM
Finding a parking spot for Sid in Windermere was tricky, but I eventually managed it. I need to sort out the A-frame to tow my Smart Car. The group arrived, the sun shone, and there was a buzz of excitement. I introduced Lucy, our walk leader for the day, and we set off. We wound through the town, which in hindsight was a mistake—shops and eager shoppers!
10:45 AM
We reached the ferry terminal, and for £1.10 each, we crossed the lake. Only card payments were accepted, so it was a slow process. On the other side, we took some group photos before starting the climb.
11:15 AM
Our first stop was the Colourful Claife Viewing Station, a stunning spot with endless lake views and vibrant stained glass windows. Suddenly, a shout: Caroline’s walking pole had slipped and was about to hit someone! Thankfully, Martin saved the day.
12:16 PM
After the mini castle, the trail became steeper. Conversation dwindled as we scrambled over rocks. It was challenging but perfect training for our upcoming Welsh 15 Peaks weekend.
1:10 PM
The path led through a desolate area with felled trees, creating a barren yet beautiful landscape. Surrounded by mountains and bathed in sunlight, I couldn’t resist shouting “whoop,” and soon echoes and others joined in.
Amongst the devastation, life flourished. Dee found wild orchids and a sea of pink foxgloves.
2:00 PM
The sun hid behind clouds, and a chill set in as we stopped for lunch. It felt like a school trip as we examined each other’s lunches. Gillian’s sausage roll dipped in Branston pickle was a highlight.
3:05 PM
The walk continued downhill to Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home. We enjoyed coffee, cake, and a tour of the house, which brought her beloved stories to life.
4:16 PM
After an hour at Hill Top, we had just 1.5 miles to go. Stephanie, carrying a newly bought pot plant, led us in single file back to the ferry.
5:15 PM
We arrived at the ferry just in time. Debby generously paid for all 17 of us to speed things up. Thanks, Debby!
6:00 PM
Our stroll back through Windermere was lovely. The town buzzed with holiday cheer, music filled the air, and shops beckoned. We dropped our bags and headed to The Flying Pig for dinner. Outside in the sunshine, we recapped the day’s highlights. Martin surprised Kim with candles on a brownie, and we all sang Happy Birthday.
A fantastic day, and I’m looking forward to a more relaxed walk and lake cruise tomorrow.
